Where it began

The story begins in Germany in the 1880's with its co-founders Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz independently attempting to free the world from the horse drawn carriage. The invention of the high-speed engine allowed both inventors to begin the foundations for a change to road transport.

Both founders pursued companies separately from each other, Benz & Cie and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). They were competitors, and they both wanted to be the best on the market.

Jellinek becomes involved

In 1897, an Austrian businessman, Emil Jellinek, gained an enthusiasm in the automobile industry. After a visit to the Daimler factory, Jellinek, ordered his first Daimler car. However due to its lack of speed, he demanded a faster car to be manufactured. Through this Daimler produced the world's first four-cylinder engine.

Over the years, Jellinek became an integral asset to DMG as he had great financial contacts, and began to promote and sell DMG vehicles to the some of the highest people in society. In April of 1900 the decision was made to use Jellinek's daughters name; Mercedes as their production name.

How we got to Mercedes-Benz

The first world war brought difficult times for manufacturers, and due to high inflation, it became especially hard for luxury brands to keep their client base. Therefore, former competitors became partners and in 1926, Daimler-Benz AG was formed.

The three-pointed star belonged to DMG and was surrounded by its trade name ‘Mercedes’ as well as the famous name ‘Benz’, whose laurel wreath entwined the two names together. The combination of all three factors resulted in the badge we all know and love today.

Mercedes-Benz has now been established for 89 years and has evolved itself into one of the most reliable brands in the automotive sector, which isn't surprising due to its rich history.

This concludes our brief history of the world renowned car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz!
